YouTube Thumbnail Viewer & Downloader

Every YouTube video has a set of thumbnail images stored on YouTube's image servers in several sizes. This tool shows you all of them for any public video or Short, so you can check how a thumbnail looks at different resolutions or save a copy for reference.

It's handy for auditing your own thumbnails, building mood boards, or checking how a competitor's thumbnail reads when it's shrunk down to the size people actually see in search.

How to use the thumbnail viewer

  1. 1Copy the link of a YouTube video or Short.
  2. 2Paste it into the box and press View thumbnails.
  3. 3Pick a size and use Open full size or Download.

  • Short link: https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ
  • Shorts link: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID

How it works

The tool reads the 11-character video ID from your link and builds the standard thumbnail addresses on i.ytimg.com. Nothing is uploaded or stored — your browser loads the images straight from YouTube.

The 1280×720 “maxresdefault” image only exists when the uploader provided an HD source. If it's missing, the tool tells you and the 640×480 version is the largest available.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use downloaded thumbnails in my own videos?

Thumbnails are copyrighted by the creator who made them. Downloading one for personal reference or to check your own work is fine, but reusing someone else's thumbnail in your content usually needs their permission.

Why does the HD thumbnail show a grey placeholder?

YouTube only generates the 1280×720 version when the original upload or custom thumbnail was high resolution. Older or low-resolution videos only have the smaller sizes.

Does it work with private videos?

No. Only thumbnails that YouTube serves publicly can be shown. Private video thumbnails are not accessible.

What size should my own thumbnail be?

YouTube recommends 1280×720 pixels (16:9), under 2 MB, in JPG, PNG or GIF format, with a minimum width of 640 pixels.
